Message from the Dean

Welcome to the Cochran School of Nursing website. Cochran is the oldest nursing school in Westchester County and graduated the first six students in 1897. Since that time, close to 3,000 students have graduated and have been well prepared to practice the art and the science of nursing. The faculty and staff believe that our mission and goals are achieved through the rigorous curriculum and the clinical opportunities offered to our students. The school is strongly committed to preparing nurses who are competent to manage the health care needs of the communities we serve.

Significant changes over the last few decades have affected the world of healthcare and will continue to do so in the future. There are extraordinary challenges and opportunities for the nursing workforce. The practice of nursing continues to advance and the need for nurses continues to grow. Cochran graduates will  provide care to individuals, families, and communities in virtually all locations in which health care is delivered including hospitals, long-term care facilities, ambulatory care settings, homes, schools, and workplaces. As the largest group of healthcare providers in the workforce, nurses have enormous responsibility to find innovative ways to provide quality care and produce improved health outcomes.

Graduates of Cochran often say that the best things about Cochran are the small class size and a faculty that is invested and makes every effort to help the students succeed. We offer both a day program and an evening program for those who need a flexible schedule and have guaranteed clinical placements at St. John's Riverside Hospital for all medical – surgical and maternity rotations. We also have long standing pediatric clinical sites at the Maria Ferrari Children's Hospital in Valhalla and psychiatric clinical placements at St. Vincent's Hospital in Harrison.

Nursing is an extraordinarily varied and satisfying career path. It will allow you to serve others, become a lifelong learner and develop as a person and as a professional.  There has never been a better time to choose nursing as a career. I welcome you to explore the Cochran School of Nursing and join the ranks of students and graduates that are among the very best!
