About the Medical Library

MISSION STATEMENT AND LIBRARY POLICIES

The mission of the medical library is to provide resources and services to support the needs of all members of the hospital in the care of patients. The library also strives to serve the curriculum of the Cochran School of Nursing; managerial decision making; performance improvement activities; individual and institutional research; as well as patient and family education. The library will provide the highest quality, maximum service to all its users.

LIBRARY INFORMATION SERVICES

The library, located on the 4th floor of the Cochran School of Nursing in the Andrus Pavilion at St. John’s Riverside Hospital, provides resources in the areas of nursing, medicine, and allied health. Library staff is available to assist with research, library instruction, circulation of library materials, and the use of a variety of electronic resources.

LIBRARY REGISTRATION

In order for the library staff to identify its patrons and track materials that are circulated from the library collection, we ask all patrons to complete a library membership form. Membership forms for Cochran students, faculty, and SJRH staff are available at the medical library or online via the Cochran School of Nursing website. (Click “forms” on the left-hand side menu on the library webpage).

BORROWING POLICIES

Library books may be borrowed for an initial period of three weeks. They must then be renewed every three weeks as needed. There is no limit on the number of renewals, unless another patron has placed a reserve on that item. Renewals remain the patron’s responsibility and are allowed in person, by telephone or by logging into the online catalog. A fine of 25 cents per day will be charged for each item that is overdue. Reference books, *DVDs, and journals, cannot be checked out of the library.

RESERVES

Items that are currently out on loan may be placed on reserve by using the online catalog or by contacting the library staff. When the items that have been placed on reserve are returned to the library, the requesting patron will be contacted. Reserved items will be held at the reference desk for one week. If reserves are not retrieved within that time, they will go to the next patron on the reserve list.

AUDIOVISUAL COLLECTION

The library maintains an extensive collection of DVDs on a variety of healthcare topics. Headphones are provided for viewing purposes.

BOOKS & JOURNALS

The library houses a collection of books including core titles in medicine, nursing, nursing education and allied health. The library also maintains access to a wide selection of medical and nursing journal titles in electronic formats.

NURSING REFERENCE CENTER PLUS

Nursing Reference Center Plus provides answers to clinical questions through access to videos and a nursing skills section. There are also nursing care plans and continuing education credits available.

R2 DIGITAL LIBRARY

The R2 Digital Library holds more than 550 eBook titles on nursing, medicine and allied health. Access is available from anywhere in the institution. In addition, a free account can be created within the Riverside Healthcare System which enables remote access.

STAT!Ref

STAT!Ref provides access to a selection of clinical textbooks and manuals covering several medical disciplines including nursing.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

The library provides an interlibrary loan service free of charge for its patrons. This service provides journal articles that are not available in the library’s collection.

COMPUTERS, PRINTERS, & COPIERS

The library has a total of eleven desktop computers, each equipped with a built-in DVD drive. Several mobile laptop carts are available for use, as well as a large-screen TV/laptop combination. Finally, there are 2 printers and 1 copier available for student use.

CELL PHONES

Cell phones must be kept on silent and phone calls must be conducted outside of the library.

FOOD AND DRINK

• Food is not allowed in the library
• Drinks must be in covered containers
• Please use caution around library materials, computers and other electronic equipment
