Admissions Requirements

*Day Program students with outstanding liberal arts are strongly advised to complete General or Behavioral Psychology before admission.

*All applicants are required to take a course (1 credit or certificate) in Medical Terminology prior to admission.

TRANSCRIPTS

  • ALL Official High School Transcript or GED Diploma/Certificate
  • Applicants with foreign transcripts must provide Cochran with an unofficial copy of their original foreign transcript and have the transcript evaluated by World Education Services or Globe Language Services and sent to Cochran as their official transcript.
  • ALL Official Transcripts from all the colleges that you have attended.
  • It is the responsibility of the person seeking a transfer credit to provide transcripts of courses taken as well as a course syllabus and laboratory experiences.
  • An official transcript from a college or university must show an equivalent amount of credits of to be accepted for transfer credit.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 required for all transferable prerequisite courses.
  • Only one retake in any one of the science courses is allowed within a 5 year limit to achieve the grade of C+ or better.
  • Transfer credit for science courses in Anatomy and Physiology I & II , Microbiology and Nutrition must be taken five (5) years prior to admission. (online science courses are not accepted)
  • Transfer credit for A&P and Micro will not be given if the applicant cannot provide documentation that the course contained a lab component. (unless taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, academic semesters Spring 2020 through Fall 2022)

Cochran School of Nursing accepts both the Kaplan Nursing entrance exam and the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS), administered by ATI Testing Services.  Both standardized tests that assesses readiness for nursing school.  Cochran is an approved testing center for the Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam if an applicant is applying to the school.  Both Kaplan and TEAS may be taken at any outside, approved testing center.

ATI Testing

  • Anatomy I, Anatomy II, Microbiology and Nutrition must be completed within 5 years.
  • Introduction to Psychology and Developmental Psychology must be completed within 10 years.
  • English I, English II and Sociology have no time limit for transfer credits
  • Through College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams in Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Sociology and English Composition with an Essay.
  • Applicants seeking transfer credit by examination must arrange to have official transcripts sent to Cochran School of Nursing.
  • Because of the wide diversity in the organization of nursing content in various programs, nursing courses are NOT transferable.
  • Academic transcripts from applicants holding LPN licensure will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Once accepted, students must submit evidence of a recent (1 year) Physical Examination completed by their Primary Health Care Provider.

Correction of any health problem that would interfere with the practice of nursing prior to enrollment into the school.

A physical examination with laboratory reports from screening tests and immunizations, including but not limited to MMR, Meningitis, COVID, Hepatitis B, seasonal influenza (additionally those as required by NYPH Law #2165 must be completed prior to entrance into school).
 
Influenza vaccine should be administered and documented within 2 weeks of annual DOH influenza statement or upon institutional availability notification. 
 
CSN requires all students to have minimum of 1 COVID vaccine prior to starting the program, as of 2026.
 
HEALTH AND ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES

The applicant must obtain health clearance once accepted to the program. In addition, the applicant must meet the following physical requirements:

•Visual acuity must be adequate to read words, graphs, charts, instruments, and observe color changes.
• Auditory acuity must be sufficient to hear spoken words and body sounds with a stethoscope.
• Speech must be clear to communicate verbally in Standard English with clients, patients and their families and with other members of the health profession.
• Sense of touch must be sensitive enough to feel for temperature and for size, shape and movement of parts of the human body.
• Sense of smell must be acute enough to detect odors (breath, drainage) that indicate changes in the status of the client/patient and unsafe environmental conditions (gas, smoke).
• Physical stamina must be sufficient to move freely and to assist in moving (lifting, transporting, ambulating) and in positioning clients/patients of all ages.
• Manual dexterity must be proficient enough to allow for proper utilization of equipment (syringes, catheters, manometers, etc.) during nursing care.
• Cognitive and reasoning abilities must be sufficient to interpret findings and apply knowledge to practice.

APPLICANT WITH A DISABILITY

The Cochran School of Nursing provides reasonable accommodations for all students whose documented disabilities will otherwise place them at a disadvantage in the completion of the nursing program.

Applicants needing reasonable accommodations must provide the necessary and properly signed documentation at the time of admission or prior to taking the entrance exam.

If an applicant has a physical or mental disability, the applicant should discuss this before admission testing.  The applicant will be advised to contact the Disability Officer for the disability procedure. (See Policy S-9)

NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND CLASS WITHOUT COMPLETE HEALTH CLEARANCE. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS

PLEASE NOTE:

  • You must be a US citizen, permanent resident (Greencard holder), or on the path to citizenship. Your immigration status affects your eligibility for licensure. Please contact admissions with any questions.

  • Students who have attended other nursing programs will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

  • Final approval for all transfer credit and credit by examination will be at the discretion of the Cochran School of Nursing.

  • All students are required to have a laptop for classes. Upon admission to Cochran, you will be notified of system requirements.
